Lake Tahoe Facts:
- Lake Tahoe is located along the border of California and Nevada, with two-thirds in California.
- A drive around the entire Lake is 72 miles, at 22 miles in length and 12 miles wide.
- Tahoe is fed by 63 streams and two hot springs.
- The Truckee River is Tahoe's only outlet and flows from the dam in Tahoe City east through Reno and eventually drains into Pyramid Lake in the Nevada desert.
- By law, the lake's surface elevation cannot exceed 6,229.1', so it's kept at the level or lower by releasing water into the Truckee River at the dam in Tahoe City.
- Lake Tahoe is the largest alpine Lake in North America and the second deepest lake in the U.S.
- It is the eighth deepest in the world at a maximum depth of 1,645 feet.
- If Lake Tahoe was emptied, it would submerge California under 14.5" of water. Or in other words, there is enough water in Tahoe to supply everyone in the United States with 50 gallons of water per day for five years.
- Due to its depth, Lake Tahoe never freezes. The surface temperature ranges from 41-68 degrees.
